Recently, there has been a change regarding the registration renewal date for Heavy Trucks that weigh between 5,000 and 7,999 pounds. This date will be based on the owner’s birth month except if the owner is a business. So, owners who have registrations which expire on Dec.2021 will be allowed to extend their renewal to their birth month in 2022 or an additional year to their birth month in 2023. In case a customer's birth date is between January and June, a prorated amount could be paid to renew their registrations in December 2020 for a period of 1 to 18 months. For customers whose birth date is between July and December, they would pay a prorated amount in December 2020 for 7 to 24 months.
A Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is an annual federal highway tax set on certain heavy vehicles such as trucks, truck tractors and buses. The tax is only implemented when the vehicle weighs 55,000 pounds or more. After collecting these taxes, the federal government distributes revenues back to the states and uses the money to construct highways and maintain projects.
Florida Statutes Section 320.02 (7) indicate that owners of vehicles need to have proof of payment or exemption from HVUT on motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 55,000 pounds or more prior to issuance of a registration.
